Address Poisoning: Latest Trend for Scammers?

Even though phishing scams were the most trendy scamming technique adopted by fraudsters in 2022, MetaMask also recently identified the ‘address poisoning’ mechanism. Besides being carried out by high-strung cybercriminals, this method involves changing the victim’s transaction history.

Hackers create counterfeit crypto wallets with the same beginning and end to achieve this. Thus, the victims can easily mistake the addresses for the ones they recognize, as it barely differs visually, ending up sending the funds to the hacker.

Ultimately, DeFi wallet users can avoid attacks by using an address book instead of copying wallet numbers from the transaction history. Many cybersecurity experts also advise using cold storage wallets, as they’re not connected to the internet and therefore are much harder to hack.
